跳脱出惯常的战争爱情故事，后半段更是将爱情这一线索淡化为背景，将最简单的人性关系融入并提升到到血腥***战争中极具戏剧性的冲突当中。德国战争题材作品中目前看到的仅次于《桥》的作品，无论是借鉴塔可夫斯基的摄影技巧还是在内容的编排上都比导演之后的《撒谎者雅各布》高出一截。
